The room
Kelly’s opened in 1720 on Bank Street, now a small square beside CastleCourt. Vaulted ceiling, worn bar, bits on the walls. It is not trying to look like 1720 for Instagram; it just never got rebuilt into something else.
The Ulster History Circle plaque marks it as a meeting place of the Society of United Irishmen in the 1790s. Henry Joy McCracken is the name attached to the usual story (hiding from soldiers behind the bar). Treat that as folklore unless you are writing a thesis. Joseph Devlin worked here in the 1890s. The Downey brothers bought the pub in 2024 after a long spell under Lily Mulholland and Martin O’Hara.
Music and food
Midweek sessions are the reputation: trad in a tight room, tourists and regulars in the same space. Stew and a Guinness is the tourist order and the kitchen is used to it. Confirm session nights on the door or socials before you plan a night around one.

Who it is wrong for
Anyone who needs step-free ease, a reservation, or a room that stays quiet after 8pm when a session is running. It is small. Standing in the door with a suitcase is a bad look.
Walk from here
The Crown is the Victorian opposite of this cellar. Madden’s is the other tight trad room. The Sunflower is a short walk if you want live music without the 18th-century ceiling.
